I have contracted with IBM (or another 3rd party) for Business Recovery Services. What would CU*Answers Network Services give me that I don’t already get?

Traditional 3rd party hot-sites like IBM and Sungard offer excellent solutions. Our solution is targeted for the smaller iSeries marketplace, where it can be an affordable alternative to the larger players. We believe that both our Managed Data Replication and Self-Managed Data Replication services are a better solution for most iSeries shops.

How do I know which of your three Business Continuity services is right for a us?

We have designed our three solutions so that we have affordable solutions for companies of all sizes. Typically, the most cost-effective solution for our small-to-medium sized clients interested in minimizing down-time and not willing to risk significant data loss would be our Hosted Data Replication service. Our larger clients with savvy technical staffs and locations spread across a larger geography would typically lean toward the Self-Managed Data Replication solution. The first step you should take is to call your WESCO Net Sales Representative, and they will work with you to help determine the best solution for your requirements.

What are the major components of your data replication offerings?

Both our Hosted and Self-Managed Data Replication solutions require a backup iSeries server, Echo2 software form our partner iTera, Inc., a reliable high speed communication line, and implementation services.
Our Hosted Data Replication solution utilizes a dedicated or shared iSeries server located in the CU*Answers Network Services data center. Our team would load the Echo2 software on both systems and handle the administration of the backup server once replication is established.

The Self-Managed solution would require you to purchase an iSeries server before our team could provide the implementation services, and the administration would be the responsibility of the client once the replication has been established.

I do a daily back up at end-of-day and a full system backup quarterly. Is that enough?

Not necessarily. Depending on the frequency of changes to such things as terminal and user configurations and other system parameters, a great deal of data could be lost in the event of a disaster. As part of all three offerings, CU*Answers Network Services will lead you through an analysis of your system (what needs to be backed up when).

What are some of my communications options to reach your site in a disaster?

For remote site backup, the most common options is a direct circuit to CU*Answers Network Services, which would connect to our Frame Relay, or a dial-up connection which would only be used in the event of a disaster. The dial-up is most cost efficient; however, it is also the most limited in terms of volume and speed in the event of a disaster. CU*Answers Network Services will help you determine which solution is best for your credit union’s needs.

How soon should I get started?

Initial planning can begin as soon as you are ready. Both the Hosted Data Replication and Self-Managed Data Replication solutions take longer to implement because of the hardware, software, and project management required.
